Kishan Reddy Condemns Detention of Telangana BJP Leaders, Calls It Undemocratic

Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy has strongly criticised the detention of Telangana BJP leaders, describing the action as an attack on democratic rights. His comments came after Telangana BJP state president N. Ramchander Rao, along with MLAs and other senior party leaders, were reportedly placed under house arrest while they were preparing to travel to Nalgonda to meet people affected by a recent political incident.

According to Kishan Reddy, visiting affected individuals and interacting with people is part of the responsibility of an opposition party. He questioned why BJP leaders should be prevented from travelling to Nalgonda when their stated purpose was to meet those who had been affected.

The Union Minister argued that citizens in a democracy have the right to express their views, raise concerns and protest peacefully. He alleged that the authorities in Telangana were instead using restrictions and police action against opposition leaders who were questioning the government's functioning and seeking accountability.

BJP Leaders Prevented From Travelling to Nalgonda

The immediate controversy centres on the detention of Ramchander Rao and other BJP leaders. The leaders were reportedly planning to visit Nalgonda following an attack involving the residence of BJP district president Nagam Varshit Reddy.

Kishan Reddy said that preventing elected representatives and senior party leaders from meeting affected people raised serious questions about the government's approach to political opposition. He maintained that leaders should be allowed to interact with citizens and understand their concerns rather than being restricted from travelling.

The incident has added another layer to the political friction between the BJP and the ruling Congress in Telangana. Recent clashes and allegations involving workers from the two parties have already created tension in the state.

Kishan Reddy also questioned the government's response to earlier incidents involving BJP workers and offices. He referred to the reported attack on the BJP district president's residence in Nalgonda and an incident involving the BJP state office, asking why those responsible had not faced similar action.

The Union Minister accused the state government of focusing on restricting opposition leaders instead of addressing the underlying political disputes. He questioned the rationale behind detaining leaders who were attempting to visit people affected by an incident while, according to his allegation, those accused of carrying out attacks were not subjected to comparable restrictions.

Kishan Reddy said the government should answer questions raised by the opposition rather than attempting to prevent those questions from being asked. He alleged that the police were being used to suppress political voices and prevent opposition leaders from highlighting public concerns.

His criticism reflects a broader argument being made by the Telangana BJP that opposition activity should not be curtailed through preventive detention or house arrest. The party has positioned the Nalgonda episode as an example of what it describes as an attempt to restrict its political activities.

BJP Says Its Political Campaign Will Continue

Despite the detentions, Kishan Reddy said the BJP would continue raising issues affecting people in Telangana. He argued that preventing leaders from travelling or temporarily restricting their movement would not stop the party from pursuing its political activities.

The Union Minister also invoked Telangana's history of public movements, saying the people of the state are politically aware and capable of recognising who is responsible for political confrontations and who has been affected by them.

He maintained that restrictions could not permanently silence questions from the opposition. In his view, raising public issues, exposing alleged wrongdoing and standing with people affected by political incidents remain important responsibilities for the BJP.

The BJP's response indicates that the party intends to keep the issue alive politically rather than treating the detention of its leaders as an isolated incident.

Political Tensions Remain High in Telangana

The latest dispute comes at a time when political tensions between the BJP and Congress in Telangana are increasingly visible. Allegations surrounding attacks involving party workers have intensified the confrontation, with both political sides seeking to establish their positions before the public.

For the BJP, the detention of its state president and other leaders has become a question of political freedom and the right of opposition parties to engage with citizens. Kishan Reddy has made it clear that his party views the restrictions as unacceptable.
