YSRCP Eyes Kadapa Mayor Post, Dr. Shiva Bharat Reddy Emerges as Key Contender

The upcoming local body elections are putting the spotlight on the Kadapa Municipal Corporation, with the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) looking to retain its strong political position in the city. Within the party, attention is increasingly turning toward the mayoral race, particularly if the post is reserved for the Open/General category.

Among the names being discussed for the YSRCP mayoral candidature is Dr. Gosula Shiva Bharat Reddy, a Kadapa-based doctor who has previously headed the party’s doctors’ wing at the state level. His possible entry into the civic electoral contest has generated interest within party circles, with his personal and political connections being viewed as potential advantages.

According to the information surrounding the proposed candidature, Shiva Bharat Reddy has longstanding ties with the YS family. His wife, Seetharama Lakshmi, is the daughter of former Krishna district MLA Dr. Dutta Ramachandra Rao. The Dutta family has had a long association with the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy, who studied alongside Ramachandra Rao. That relationship also continued into the political sphere, with YS Jagan Mohan Reddy giving Ramachandra Rao the Gannavaram Assembly ticket in 2014.

The family connection could also have an electoral dimension in Kadapa. Shiva Bharat Reddy's wife belongs to the Kapu (Balija) community, which has a sizeable presence among voters in the city. YSRCP leaders reportedly believe this social connection could help the prospective candidate reach out to sections of the community during the campaign.

His wife's current political role is another factor being discussed. She is serving as a YSRCP ZPTC member from Unguturu in Krishna district, adding another layer to the family's political involvement.

Beyond family and political associations, supporters of Shiva Bharat Reddy are highlighting his personal profile. He is described as educated, financially well established and relatively free from controversies. His reported friendship with Jagan is also being considered an advantage as the party weighs possible candidates for one of its important municipal contests.

The YSRCP's larger objective is to protect its influence over Kadapa Corporation. The party considers the city an important political stronghold and is expected to focus heavily on candidate selection as the local body elections approach. From the party's perspective, choosing a candidate who can combine organisational backing, local acceptance and community support could be crucial.

The possible reservation of the mayoral position is therefore an important factor in determining whether Shiva Bharat Reddy can formally enter the race. If the seat is allotted to the Open/General category, his name is expected to receive greater attention within the YSRCP.

However, the electoral process is not yet at the stage where the contest can be considered fully underway. A legal dispute concerning the division of wards in Kadapa Corporation is currently pending in court. The outcome of that matter is expected to have a bearing on how the electoral process progresses.

Until the legal issues surrounding the ward divisions are resolved, political activity related to the mayoral election is likely to remain preparatory. Once the issue is settled, parties will have greater clarity on the electoral map and the political calculations involved in the corporation.

At present, Dr. Shiva Bharat Reddy appears to be one of the prominent names being considered if the reservation conditions suit his candidature. His association with the YS family, his own political background and his connections through his wife's family are among the factors being discussed.

The final picture, however, will emerge only after the reservation is confirmed and the legal proceedings concerning the ward divisions move forward.
