Vijay for Prime Minister? TVK Campaign Creates Unease Within Congress

A fresh political debate has emerged in Tamil Nadu after supporters of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) began promoting party chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay as a potential candidate for the Prime Minister’s post. The campaign has reportedly caused discomfort within the Congress, which has been positioning Rahul Gandhi as its preferred national leadership face.

The developments come at a time when Vijay’s political profile has expanded rapidly beyond Tamil Nadu. Once known primarily as a major Tamil film star, Vijay entered electoral politics with TVK and went on to lead the party to power in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. His growing popularity has now triggered speculation about whether the party could eventually seek a larger role for him in national politics.

Recent posters and videos associated with TVK supporters have reportedly carried messages portraying Vijay as a future Prime Minister. The campaign has particularly attracted attention because Congress is an important political partner of the Vijay-led government in Tamil Nadu.

TVK Supporters Push Vijay's National Ambitions

The latest campaign appears to have been driven primarily by sections of the TVK leadership and supporters rather than being presented as a formal national political declaration by Vijay himself.

Some TVK leaders have argued that Vijay's popularity gives him the potential to become a national political figure. The argument gained additional momentum following the latest India Today-CVoter Mood of the Nation survey, in which Vijay emerged as one of the leading choices for the country's next Prime Minister.

According to the survey, Vijay received 9.2% support among respondents when asked about their preferred choice for the next Prime Minister. He stood behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who received 48.7%, and Rahul Gandhi, who received 27.1%.

The result was notable because Vijay has only recently moved from cinema into mainstream electoral politics. His appearance near the top of a national leadership preference survey has given TVK supporters additional material to argue that his appeal is no longer restricted to Tamil Nadu.

However, a survey preference should not automatically be interpreted as an indication of electoral strength or a formal political alliance decision. The 2029 Lok Sabha election is still some distance away, and national political equations can change substantially before then.

Why Congress Is Watching the Development

The emergence of a "Vijay for PM" campaign presents a sensitive situation for Congress.

The party has been seeking to strengthen Rahul Gandhi's position as a major opposition leader and potential Prime Ministerial candidate. A campaign from an alliance partner promoting another leader for the same position could therefore create complications over leadership messaging.

Reports indicate that some Congress leaders are uncomfortable with the public projection of Vijay as a future Prime Minister. The concern is not necessarily about Vijay's popularity alone, but about maintaining clarity regarding the alliance's larger national political strategy.

At the same time, Congress leaders in Tamil Nadu have sought to play down suggestions that the alliance has changed its national leadership preference. Tamil Nadu Minister P. Viswanathan recently stated that Rahul Gandhi remains the party's Prime Ministerial choice and expressed confidence that he would eventually become Prime Minister.

This response highlights the difference between the enthusiasm among some TVK supporters and the official position being expressed by Congress representatives.

Vijay's Rapid Rise in Tamil Nadu Politics

Vijay's political journey has progressed at an unusual pace. He founded TVK in 2024 after years as one of Tamil cinema's most popular actors. The party subsequently entered electoral politics and successfully established itself as a major force in Tamil Nadu.

Following the 2026 Assembly election, Vijay became Chief Minister, giving him direct administrative experience in addition to his enormous public following.

His transition from cinema to politics has therefore moved considerably faster than that of many other celebrity politicians. His supporters now see this combination of mass popularity and political authority as a possible foundation for a national role.

The latest survey has further strengthened that narrative, placing Vijay ahead of several established national opposition figures in the Prime Ministerial preference question.

A Larger Question for the Alliance

The immediate issue is less about whether Vijay will actually contest for the Prime Minister's post and more about how his growing political stature will affect relationships within the broader opposition space.

Congress has a long-established national organisation and Rahul Gandhi remains one of its central political figures. TVK, meanwhile, is a relatively new party whose strength is closely connected to Vijay's personal popularity.

If TVK leaders continue promoting Vijay at the national level, discussions over leadership, alliance strategy and the 2029 Lok Sabha elections could become increasingly important.

For now, the "Vijay for PM" campaign appears to be more of a political signal and an expression of support from sections of TVK than a confirmed national electoral plan. Nevertheless, the reaction from Congress demonstrates that even an informal campaign can have wider implications when it involves the leadership of an alliance.

With Vijay's popularity expanding beyond the traditional boundaries of Tamil Nadu politics, his future role in national politics is likely to remain a subject of discussion. The coming years will determine whether the current Prime Ministerial buzz remains a supporter-driven campaign or develops into a more formal political ambition.
