Irumudi Faces Calls to Remove Scenes Over Government School Portrayal

Ravi Teja’s latest film Irumudi has found itself at the centre of a fresh controversy in Andhra Pradesh, with a teachers’ organisation objecting to portions of the movie that it believes cast the public education system in a negative light.

The film, directed by Shiva Nirvana, was released in theatres on August 21 and has been receiving strong attention at the box office. However, the latest criticism comes from the Andhra Pradesh Teachers’ Federation (APTF), which has called for the removal of scenes that it says are disrespectful towards government teachers, students and schools.

Teachers’ Association Raises Objection

The APTF has publicly expressed concern over the way certain sequences in Irumudi depict the government education system. According to the organisation, the film presents a government school teacher in an unfavourable manner and, in doing so, risks creating an inaccurate impression about teachers working in the public sector.

The association has also pointed to specific references used in the film. It claims that the movie mentions the Zilla Parishad High School in Sileru, located in the Alluri Sitharama Raju district, while also showing the uniform associated with government school students in Andhra Pradesh.

For the teachers’ body, the concern is not simply about fictional storytelling. It argues that using identifiable references to real educational institutions and familiar school uniforms can make the portrayal appear connected to the actual government school system.

Demand for Removal of Controversial Portions

APTF State President Chennupati Manjula and General Secretary Basavalingarao have jointly raised the issue, stressing that cinema can have a considerable influence on how audiences perceive social institutions.

The organisation has therefore urged the Irumudi team to take action and remove the portions that it considers defamatory or damaging to government teachers and public schools.

The association’s argument centres on the responsibility filmmakers have when dealing with subjects connected to society. While creative freedom remains an important part of filmmaking, the teachers’ body believes that references to real institutions should be handled carefully, particularly when the surrounding portrayal is negative.

Scenes Are Linked to the Film’s Story

One of the complications surrounding the demand is that the disputed portions are reportedly important to the film’s narrative. The controversy therefore comes at a time when the movie is already being discussed for its intense subject matter and emotional storytelling.

Earlier promotional material and comments from director Shiva Nirvana indicated that Irumudi was designed as a serious family drama with suspense elements. The filmmaker had explained that the story developed around a father-daughter relationship before the Ayyappa Deeksha element became an important part of the protagonist’s character journey.

The movie received a U/A certificate before its theatrical release and was locked with a runtime of approximately two hours and 25 minutes. Its story combines family emotions, social issues and thriller elements, making several of its dramatic sequences central to the overall screenplay.

Makers Yet to Respond

As of now, the makers of Irumudi have not issued an official response to the teachers’ association’s demand. It remains to be seen whether the production team will engage with the organisation or make any changes to the theatrical version.

The timing is significant because the film is currently enjoying a strong theatrical run. The movie has generated considerable interest in the Telugu states as well as overseas, with trade discussions surrounding its box-office performance continuing alongside the controversy.

For now, the dispute is focused on the depiction of government schools and teachers rather than the film’s broader themes. Whether the issue leads to any edits, discussions with the association, or simply remains a point of public debate will depend largely on the response from the Irumudi team.

With the film continuing its theatrical journey, the controversy adds another layer to the conversation surrounding Shiva Nirvana’s socially driven family thriller and Ravi Teja’s latest outing.
