Ravi Teja’s latest film Irumudi is receiving strong attention at the box office, but the film has now become the centre of a growing controversy over the way government schools and teachers are depicted. The issue has triggered objections from teacher organisations in Andhra Pradesh, with demands for changes to certain scenes.

Directed by Shiva Nirvana, Irumudi was released in theatres on August 21 and has been attracting audiences with its emotional and devotional storyline. Ravi Teja plays the lead, while Priya Bhavani Shankar, Sai Kumar and child actor Nakshatra are among the key members of the cast. The film combines family emotions with a devotional backdrop and has reportedly received a positive response from viewers.

However, the discussion surrounding the film has shifted from its entertainment value to its portrayal of the education system.

Teacher Groups Raise Objections

The Andhra Pradesh Teachers Federation (APTF) has reportedly objected to scenes involving a female teacher at a government school. According to the organisation, the character is presented in a highly negative manner, including behaviour that they believe could create an unfair impression about teachers as a whole.

The objections have become more serious because the scenes allegedly use identifiable elements associated with an actual government school in Andhra Pradesh. Teacher representatives have pointed to the use of the name of Seeleru Zilla Parishad High School and uniforms resembling those worn by students in government schools across the state.

Their concern is not simply about a fictional character behaving badly. They argue that using real-world school identifiers and familiar government-school uniforms could make audiences associate the negative portrayal with the actual education system and its teachers.

The APTF has therefore called for the controversial portions to be removed from the movie.

Demand for an Apology

The teachers' organisation has also sought a public apology from the filmmakers. It has warned that protests could be organised across the state if the disputed scenes are not removed.

The controversy has emerged at a time when Irumudi is enjoying considerable commercial momentum. That has added another dimension to the issue, as the film's success means the disputed scenes are being seen by a large number of people.

For the teachers' community, the argument is that cinema has a significant influence on public perception. According to his explanation, the film attempts to highlight certain darker aspects and shortcomings that can exist within society and professions. The disputed character, therefore, was intended as part of the story rather than as a representation of every teacher.

This distinction is at the heart of the controversy.

Filmmakers often create characters who represent negative behaviour, including corrupt officials, irresponsible doctors, dishonest police officers or problematic teachers.
