India's leading information technology services companies are expected to further reduce the number of employees kept on the "bench" during FY27, reflecting a broader shift toward artificial intelligence-driven workforce planning and tighter cost management. Industry experts believe the trend marks a significant departure from the traditional hiring model, where companies maintained large pools of unassigned employees to quickly respond to client projects.

The bench refers to employees who remain on a company's payroll but are temporarily not working on active customer assignments. In the past, firms often maintained sizeable reserve teams to meet sudden project requirements. However, advances in AI, improved forecasting tools, and stronger resource planning are allowing businesses to operate with fewer idle workers while maintaining service levels.

According to industry estimates, average bench strength across major Indian IT firms could decline to around 8-10 percent during FY27. This follows a steady reduction over recent years as companies increasingly prioritize efficiency and deploy employees more quickly onto billable projects. Time spent on the bench has also become shorter than it was a few years ago, reflecting faster workforce allocation.

Recruitment strategies are evolving alongside these operational changes. Instead of hiring in anticipation of future demand, many technology companies are focusing on roles backed by confirmed client requirements. Demand remains strongest for professionals with expertise in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and data engineering, while broad-based hiring across traditional technology functions has become more selective.

Analysts say the emphasis is now on maintaining a workforce that is immediately deployable and equipped with specialized digital skills. With revenue growth facing pressure in parts of the technology services sector, companies are seeking to improve employee utilization while protecting profit margins. AI-powered productivity improvements are also encouraging firms to rely less on large standby workforces.

The shift does not necessarily signal widespread job losses across the industry. Instead, it reflects a changing employment model in which reskilling, targeted hiring, and faster project deployment are becoming more important than maintaining excess staffing capacity. As enterprises continue investing in AI-enabled transformation projects, technology service providers are expected to align their workforce strategies with evolving client needs rather than relying on traditional bench-heavy structures.
