Amazon Prime Video Officially Confirms Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in Live-Action Tomb Raider Series

Amazon Prime Video has officially announced that Sophie Turner, best known for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, will embody the iconic Lara Croft in the highly anticipated live-action Tomb Raider series. Production is set to begin on January 19, 2026, marking a major step forward for a project that has seen years of development challenges and speculation.

Turner expressed her excitement about taking on the role, acknowledging the legacy left by previous Lara Croft actresses like Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander. She stated, "I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft. She's such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I've got." Her casting puts to rest months of rumors and speculation, confirming Turner as a fitting successor to continue Lara's legacy.

Adding to the creative strength behind the project, Emmy-winning Phoebe Waller-Bridge, renowned for her work on Fleabag and recent contributions to the James Bond film No Time to Die, will serve as the series’ showrunner. Waller-Bridge praised the talented team involved, saying, "Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is." Chad Hodge, creator of Wayward Pines, joins as co-showrunner and executive producer, while Jonathan van Tulleken will direct and executive produce.

This series is part of Amazon’s wider ambition to expand the Tomb Raider franchise universe. Beyond the television series, Amazon Games is working with Crystal Dynamics on the next major Tomb Raider video game, the first since 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The new game promises to be the most expansive installment yet, leveraging cutting-edge Unreal Engine 5 technology.

Sophie Turner’s portrayal of Lara Croft follows a distinguished line of actresses, including Angelina Jolie in the early 2000s films, Alicia Vikander in the 2018 reboot, and Hayley Atwell, who voiced Lara in Netflix’s animated series. Turner’s involvement marks a significant return to franchise television, following her acclaimed role in the crime drama Joan.

While the Tomb Raider series does not yet have a confirmed release date, production’s early 2026 start hints at a potential premiere in 2027. Fans of the franchise and newcomers alike can look forward to a fresh and thrilling take on the beloved adventurer’s story, brought to life by a powerhouse creative team and a star-studded cast.

Stay tuned for more updates on Amazon Prime Video’s Tomb Raider series as this exciting journey begins. Lara Croft is ready to make her mark once again, this time on the small screen, with Sophie Turner leading the adventure.
