Operation Sindoor and the Ban on Pakistani Content

In the wake of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the Indian government has taken a decisive step by directing all OTT platforms and digital intermediaries to immediately cease streaming content originating from Pakistan. 

This move, rooted in national security concerns, follows the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and the subsequent launch of 'Operation Sindoor'.

Operation Sindoor and the Ban on Pakistani Content

On April 22, 2025, a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, resulted in the tragic loss of several Indian and Nepali lives. In response, India initiated 'Operation Sindoor' on May 7, targeting terror camps across the border. Amidst these developments, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) issued an advisory on May 8, urging OTT platforms to discontinue all Pakistani-origin content, including films, web series, songs, and podcasts, citing national security concerns. 

Implementation and Industry Impact

Major OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar are now expected to remove Pakistani content from their libraries. This includes popular shows such as 'Zindagi Gulzar Hai' and 'Humsafar', which had previously garnered significant viewership in India. Additionally, music streaming services are anticipated to restrict access to songs by Pakistani artists. 

Broader Implications

The ban extends beyond digital content. Social media platforms have reportedly restricted access to accounts of prominent Pakistani celebrities within India. Furthermore, the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has condemned Pakistani actors who criticized India's actions, reflecting a broader cultural and diplomatic rift.
