Emma Stone's Immersive Dive into Conspiracy Theories for 'Eddington'

In preparation for her role in Ari Aster's upcoming film Eddington, Emma Stone delved deep into the world of social media conspiracy theories. Portraying Louise, the wife of a small-town sheriff entangled in a web of misinformation, Stone sought to authentically capture her character's descent into digital paranoia. This immersive research led her algorithms to continuously feed her increasingly bizarre content, a side effect she humorously lamented during a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival.

Eddington, set in May 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, explores the escalating tensions in a conservative New Mexico town. The narrative centers on a conflict between a mask-wearing mayor, played by Pedro Pascal, and a mask-resistant sheriff, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix. As the town becomes a microcosm of national debates, Louise's character becomes susceptible to the influence of a charismatic guru, played by Austin Butler, highlighting the pervasive nature of online misinformation.

The film premiered at Cannes, receiving a five-minute standing ovation, and is slated for a theatrical release on July 18, 2025. With its timely themes and star-studded cast, Eddington promises to be a poignant reflection on the impact of digital echo chambers and the spread of conspiracy theories in contemporary society.
