UAE Deputy PM Visits Injured Flydubai Pilot Smit Machchhar in Hospital, Praises His Courage
UAE Deputy Prime Minister Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum visited Indian flydubai pilot Captain Smit Machchhar in hospital on October 3, days after the pilot was seriously injured during a violent incident inside the cockpit of a flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
The meeting came as Captain Machchhar continues his recovery in Abu Dhabi. The UAE leadership has publicly recognised his actions during the emergency, while Indian authorities have also been closely following his medical condition.
The incident has drawn international attention because the pilot was able to respond despite being injured, helping create an opportunity for the flight crew and passengers to regain control of the situation.
UAE Deputy PM Meets Captain Machchhar
During his hospital visit, Sheikh Hamdan praised Captain Machchhar for his courage, sense of responsibility and concern for the lives of those on board.
He described the Indian pilot as someone who had demonstrated exceptional courage and responsibility during the emergency. He also said that Machchhar had become part of the UAE's national story and expressed appreciation on behalf of the country's leadership.
The visit carries significance because Captain Machchhar's actions occurred during an extremely serious aviation emergency. Rather than simply being recognised for his professional duties, his response has been highlighted in connection with protecting passengers during a potentially catastrophic situation.
For the UAE, the meeting also demonstrated the country's public recognition of the pilot while he remains under medical care.
What Happened During the Flydubai Flight?
The incident took place on September 30 aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
According to reports, a confrontation developed inside the cockpit involving Captain Machchhar and his co-pilot. Machchhar suffered serious injuries during the incident, and the aircraft entered a dangerous descent.
Despite being injured, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door. This allowed other people on the aircraft to intervene. Passengers and crew members helped restrain the attacker, while other pilots assisted with managing the aircraft.
The aircraft was subsequently diverted and landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The incident ended without the aircraft being lost, and those on board were able to leave the plane safely.
The precise sequence of events remains important because aviation authorities are still examining the circumstances surrounding the cockpit confrontation.
Captain Machchhar's Recovery
After receiving initial treatment in Saudi Arabia, Captain Machchhar was transferred to Abu Dhabi for further medical care.
The Indian Embassy in the UAE said on October 3 that the pilot was receiving excellent medical care and recovering well. The embassy also confirmed that it remained in contact with his family and local authorities while supporting his recovery.
Earlier, India's Ambassador to the UAE, Dr Deepak Mittal, visited Machchhar and his family at the hospital. The ambassador said the pilot was in stable condition and appeared to be in good spirits during the meeting.
These updates provide an important distinction between the seriousness of the injuries sustained during the incident and his current recovery. While he required hospital treatment, official updates indicate that his condition has been improving.
Recognition From India and the UAE
Captain Machchhar has received recognition from both Indian and UAE officials.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with the injured pilot by video call while Machchhar was recovering in hospital. During the conversation, the pilot described the circumstances he faced and the decision to act despite his injuries. Modi praised his courage and presence of mind.
The Indian government has also said it is closely following his health and that Indian diplomatic officials remain in contact with the UAE authorities and Machchhar's family.
The UAE's recognition adds another dimension to the response, particularly because Captain Machchhar is an Indian national working for a UAE-based airline.
Investigation Into the Cockpit Attack Continues
While the pilot's actions have been widely praised, authorities are still investigating the incident itself.
UAE authorities have described the attack as a serious security incident and have said investigators are examining the circumstances, including whether it was connected to terrorist activity, prior planning or other factors. Technical and physical evidence is also being examined.
It is therefore important to distinguish confirmed facts from information attributed to unnamed sources. Details about the alleged motive or background of the co-pilot should not be treated as established conclusions until authorities complete their investigation.
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority has also indicated that official findings will be communicated through the appropriate channels and urged the public not to rely on speculation.
Why the Pilot's Response Matters
The incident highlights how quickly an aviation emergency can develop and why cockpit procedures, crew coordination and emergency training are central to passenger safety.
Captain Machchhar's reported decision to regain access to the cockpit despite being injured became a crucial part of the sequence that followed. The response also involved other crew members, passengers and pilots who helped stabilise the situation.
That broader point is important: the safe outcome was not the result of one person's actions alone. It involved several people responding during an unfolding emergency.
For now, the immediate priority remains Captain Machchhar's recovery. At the same time, aviation and security authorities will continue examining exactly what happened aboard the flight and whether additional lessons can be drawn from the incident.
The hospital visit by the UAE Deputy Prime Minister has placed further attention on Captain Machchhar's role, while the latest Indian Embassy update offers some reassurance that the injured pilot is recovering under medical supervision.
