YSRCP Sets Sights on Contesting Every Seat in Andhra Pradesh Local Body Elections

The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) is preparing for an aggressive political contest in the upcoming local body elections in Andhra Pradesh, with party president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy directing the organisation to field candidates across every seat.

Jagan issued the message during a meeting with party leaders in Pulivendula, making it clear that the party should not pursue or encourage uncontested victories. Instead, the YSRCP leadership wants its candidates to enter the electoral battle wherever possible and take the local elections as a serious organisational challenge.

Jagan Calls for Full-Fledged Electoral Contest

According to the report, Jagan told party leaders and cadres that there should be no scope for avoiding a contest in the name of unanimous elections. The instruction is significant because local body elections are fought at the grassroots level, where political equations can vary considerably from village to village and constituency to constituency.

The YSRCP chief reportedly asked his party machinery to prepare for competition in every seat rather than allowing candidates to withdraw or leave positions uncontested.

The approach signals that the party intends to use the local elections not merely as an electoral exercise but also as a test of its organisational strength following its setback in the 2024 Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections.

The YSRCP's decision also places considerable importance on rebuilding its network at the village and local-government levels.

Message to Party Cadre: Do Not Be Intimidated

Jagan also reportedly told YSRCP workers not to be discouraged by pressure during the election process. The party leadership has assured its cadre that it would stand behind them if they faced political pressure or difficulties during the polls.

The message comes at a time when local elections are expected to generate intense political competition across Andhra Pradesh. Unlike Assembly or Lok Sabha elections, local contests often involve strong personal and community-level equations, making candidate selection and grassroots mobilisation particularly important.

For the YSRCP, fielding candidates across the state could therefore serve another purpose: assessing where the party retains an active organisational presence and where it needs to rebuild.

Focus on YSRCP's Previous Government

Jagan has also asked party leaders to communicate what they describe as the benefits delivered during the previous YSRCP government.

This indicates that the party's local election campaign is likely to focus not only on current political issues but also on its record in government. Party workers could be expected to take the previous administration's welfare and development initiatives directly to voters at the grassroots level.

The strategy would allow the YSRCP to reconnect with voters through local-level campaigning while simultaneously strengthening its cadre network.

Unanimous Elections Become a Political Flashpoint

The YSRCP's position has also created a political contrast with the stance expressed by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

The report says Naidu, speaking at a public meeting in Mogalthuru in West Godavari district, supported the idea of unanimous elections, arguing that such contests can help avoid rivalries and disputes at the village level.

The contrasting positions could make unanimous elections a significant political issue during the run-up to the local body polls.

While the YSRCP is calling for candidates to contest seats rather than allowing them to go uncontested, the ruling side has highlighted the possible benefits of consensus at the grassroots level.

Local Equations Could Decide the Outcome

Despite the increasingly sharp political rhetoric, the eventual nature of the contests may vary substantially across Andhra Pradesh.

Local elections are often influenced by factors that do not always mirror state-level political trends. Individual candidates, family networks, village-level alliances and local grievances can all affect voting patterns.

As a result, the YSRCP's decision to contest every available seat could provide the party with an opportunity to measure its actual grassroots strength after the 2024 electoral defeat.

The 2024 Assembly election was a major setback for the YSRCP, with the party winning only 11 of the 175 Assembly seats, while the Telugu Desam Party won 135.

Against that backdrop, the upcoming local elections carry significance beyond individual panchayats, municipalities or other local bodies.

A Test of YSRCP's Grassroots Strength

For Jagan and the YSRCP, the immediate objective appears to be clear: keep the party organisation active and ensure that its candidates are present wherever elections are held.

A broad candidate presence would give the party an opportunity to test its cadre strength, reconnect with voters and identify areas where it remains politically competitive.

At the same time, the ruling alliance will be looking to consolidate its position at the local level.

With both sides taking contrasting positions on unanimous elections, the forthcoming local body polls could develop into a closely watched grassroots political contest. Much will ultimately depend on local circumstances, candidate strength and the ability of each political camp to mobilise voters.

For the YSRCP, however, Jagan's latest direction leaves little ambiguity: the party intends to enter the local electoral arena with candidates across the board and treat the polls as an important test of its political revival.
