Telangana BJP Chief Detained While Heading to Nalgonda After Attack on Party Leader’s Residence

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao was detained by police in Hyderabad on Tuesday while he was attempting to travel to Nalgonda to meet district BJP president Nagam Varshit Reddy. The BJP leader wanted to visit Reddy following an alleged attack on his residence, an incident that has triggered a fresh political confrontation between the BJP and the ruling Congress in Telangana.

Police personnel had been stationed outside Ramchander Rao’s residence in Tarnaka from the morning as part of efforts to prevent him from travelling to Nalgonda. When the State BJP chief later came out and attempted to leave in a vehicle, police took him into custody and shifted him to Gandhi Nagar Police Station.

The detention came amid allegations surrounding an incident involving Varshit Reddy’s residence in Nalgonda. The BJP has alleged that Congress workers attacked and vandalised the house following a clash between supporters of the two parties. The BJP also claimed that members of Reddy’s family, including his mother, were physically assaulted during the incident on Monday evening.

BJP chief says he was stopped from meeting party colleague

Ramchander Rao said his proposed visit was intended to express solidarity with the Nalgonda BJP leader and his family. According to his social media statement, he objected to being prevented from travelling to the district and described his detention as an attack on democratic principles.

The State BJP chief had earlier said he was being kept under house arrest specifically to stop him from visiting Varshit Reddy. He maintained that his decision to travel was connected to the alleged attack on the district party president’s residence and that he wanted to personally meet the affected family.

The BJP has questioned why action was allegedly not taken against those responsible for the incident involving Reddy’s residence while the State party president was detained when he attempted to meet his colleague. The party has presented the episode as an example of what it describes as the Congress government’s approach towards the Opposition.

Senior BJP leaders condemn detention

The detention quickly drew criticism from senior BJP leaders. Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy condemned the action against Ramchander Rao and described it as an attack on democratic rights.

Kishan Reddy also referred to the detention as the second instance of house arrest involving a BJP leader within a week. He argued that preventing opposition leaders from meeting their party workers was an indication of growing political restrictions in the State.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar also criticised the police action. He questioned why the BJP leader whose residence was allegedly attacked had not received similar protection while the State BJP president was arrested when he attempted to visit him.

Bandi Sanjay further alleged that the Congress government was using the police to discourage the Opposition from raising questions about law and order. He called for the immediate release of Ramchander Rao.

Political tensions intensify

The episode adds another layer to the continuing political friction between the Congress government and the BJP in Telangana. The BJP has increasingly focused its criticism on alleged attacks against its workers and restrictions placed on its programmes and leaders.

The Nalgonda incident has also become politically significant because it involves senior local party leadership and has prompted the State BJP president himself to intervene. His attempt to travel to the district, followed by police detention, has now become a separate point of contention between the two parties.

For the BJP, the alleged attack on Varshit Reddy’s residence is being portrayed as a law-and-order issue requiring firm action. The party has also questioned the government’s response and accused it of treating opposition leaders and ruling-party supporters differently.

The developments come at a time when political parties in Telangana are already engaging in increasingly sharp exchanges over public order, political programmes and the functioning of the police administration.

Focus now shifts to Nalgonda

With Ramchander Rao prevented from reaching Nalgonda, attention is likely to remain focused on the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack on Varshit Reddy’s residence and the police response to the confrontation.

The BJP is demanding action against those it alleges were involved in the attack, while the detention of its State president has emerged as a separate political issue. The competing allegations are expected to keep the incident in the spotlight as both parties seek to establish their version of events.

For the Telangana BJP, Ramchander Rao’s attempted visit was presented as an effort to stand with a party colleague following an alleged attack. For the government and police, the decision to prevent the visit has now become the subject of intense political criticism.

The incident therefore goes beyond a single detention, reflecting the wider contest between the ruling Congress and the BJP over political space, law and order, and the rights of Opposition parties to mobilise their leaders and workers across the State.
