Stock Market Today: Nifty Reclaims 23,100 as Markets Recover From Day’s Low; Banks, Metals Gain
Indian stock markets staged a partial recovery from the day’s lows on September 25, with the Nifty 50 moving back above 23,100 and the Sensex recovering more than 250 points from its intraday low. Despite the late-session improvement, broader market sentiment remained cautious as investors continued to monitor geopolitical uncertainty and the possibility of another weekly decline.
Nifty and Sensex Recover From Intraday Lows
The domestic market showed some resilience during the second half of Friday’s trading session.
The Nifty 50 recovered around 80 points from its intraday low and moved back above the 23,100 level. The Sensex also pared a significant portion of its losses, recovering more than 250 points from the session's low.
The recovery is notable because the benchmark indices have been under pressure in recent sessions. On September 24, the Nifty closed at 23,063.10 after falling 1.64%, while the Sensex declined 1.67%.
However, Friday's rebound did not completely remove the pressure surrounding the market.
Seventh Consecutive Weekly Loss in Sight
Even with the intraday recovery, Indian equities remained on track for a seventh consecutive weekly decline.
The prolonged weakness highlights how cautious investors have become. Instead of responding only to domestic corporate developments, markets are also reacting strongly to global events, crude oil movements, interest-rate expectations and geopolitical developments.
Uncertainty surrounding US-Iran discussions remained an important sentiment factor during Friday's session. For investors, developments on the geopolitical front can influence risk appetite as well as expectations for commodities and global economic conditions.
Banks, Metals and Realty See Buying Interest
Friday's trading pattern showed selective buying rather than a broad-based rally.
Banking, metal and real estate-related stocks attracted buying interest, helping the benchmark indices recover from their lows.
The sector rotation is worth watching because different parts of the market are responding differently to the current environment. At the same time, IT and pharmaceutical stocks remained relatively weak.
This divergence suggests that investors were not uniformly exiting equities. Instead, money was moving between sectors depending on near-term expectations and individual stock factors.
Axis Bank, M&M Among Nifty Gainers
Within the Nifty 50 basket, Axis Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra and Asian Paints featured among the leading gainers during the session.
On the other side, Max Healthcare, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Infosys were among the stocks facing selling pressure.
The contrasting performance of individual stocks is an important reminder that index movements can hide substantial differences underneath the surface.
Broader Market Picture Remains Mixed
The broader market did not show a uniform direction.
Small-cap stocks were trading in positive territory, while overall market breadth remained relatively neutral. The India VIX, a measure of expected market volatility, was down around 3% during the session.
A lower VIX generally indicates that near-term expectations for market volatility have eased compared with the previous level. However, it does not by itself establish that the broader market trend has reversed.
That distinction is particularly important when benchmark indices remain close to recent pressure zones.
ESDS Software Shares in Focus
ESDS Software Solution was another stock attracting attention on Friday.
The data-centre services company hit a 5% lower circuit after reporting its June-quarter financial results. Its consolidated net profit fell 57% sequentially to ₹29 crore from ₹67 crore, while revenue declined 20% quarter-on-quarter to ₹134 crore.
The quarterly numbers also show why investors can react sharply to individual earnings announcements even when the broader market is relatively stable.
Despite the Friday decline, ESDS had previously delivered a substantial gain from its IPO price. The company was listed on the NSE at ₹757 against an issue price of ₹429, representing a 76.46% premium at listing.
What Investors Should Watch Next
The key question for the market is whether the recovery from Friday's lows can develop into sustained buying or remains an intraday rebound.
The 23,100 region has already emerged as an important level in recent market discussions. Earlier technical commentary had identified the 23,100–23,000 area as a significant support zone for the Nifty.
For investors, the next few sessions could therefore be important for assessing whether the index can stabilise around these levels.
At the same time, global developments remain relevant. Any major change in geopolitical tensions, crude oil prices, global bond yields or foreign fund flows could quickly alter market sentiment.
The Bigger Picture
Friday's trading session offered two contrasting signals: the market was able to recover meaningfully from its lows, but the broader weekly trend remained under pressure.
That makes the current market environment one where headline index movements alone may not tell the complete story. Sector rotation, individual earnings, foreign institutional activity, volatility and global developments are all contributing to daily market direction.
For retail investors, the recent volatility underlines the importance of distinguishing between a temporary intraday recovery and a sustained change in the underlying market trend. Rather than reacting to a single session, investors may want to track how the Nifty behaves around key support and resistance levels and whether buying participation broadens across sectors.
Jewellery Designs Hub Market View: The Friday recovery provides evidence of buying interest at lower levels, but the broader trend remains unsettled. Investors should closely monitor upcoming global cues, geopolitical developments, crude oil movements and the ability of the benchmark indices to hold important support zones before drawing conclusions about the next market phase.
