Stock Market Today: Global Cues to Watch Before Trading Begins

Indian equity markets are set for a cautious start on September 7 as investors assess a mixed global backdrop, movements in crude oil and gold, US interest-rate expectations, and fresh institutional fund-flow data. GIFT Nifty was indicating a mildly weak opening, while developments in the US and Asian markets are likely to influence sentiment during the session.

The domestic market had ended the previous week on a positive note, with both benchmark indices recovering from a four-session losing streak. However, the weekly performance remained negative, keeping investors alert to overseas developments and potential volatility.

GIFT Nifty Signals a Cautious Opening

GIFT Nifty was trading around 23,980.50 in early trade, down about 29.50 points. The movement suggested that Indian equities could begin Monday's session on a flat-to-negative note.

On September 4, the Sensex gained 362.57 points, or 0.48%, to close at 76,515.43. The Nifty added 24.25 points, or 0.10%, ending at 23,897.70.

Despite Friday's recovery, both indices declined by nearly 1% during the week, highlighting the fragile nature of the recent rebound.

The broader market delivered a mixed performance. The Nifty Midcap index declined 0.2%, while the Smallcap index gained 0.2% and reached a fresh record high.

Asian Markets Gain on Growth Optimism

Asian equities started Monday on a stronger footing. Investors viewed the latest US employment data as a sign of resilience in the global economy, even though the report complicated expectations surrounding the Federal Reserve's interest-rate policy.

At the same time, rising geopolitical tensions involving the US and Iran pushed oil prices higher. This combination of stronger growth expectations and renewed energy-supply concerns is creating a mixed environment for Asian investors.

For Indian markets, higher crude prices remain an important risk factor because sustained increases in energy costs can influence inflation, corporate margins and the country's import bill.

Wall Street Ends Lower

US stocks finished lower in the previous session after a stronger-than-expected employment report increased speculation that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates at its upcoming policy meeting.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 272.51 points, or 0.51%, to 53,413.60. The S&P 500 dropped 29.30 points, or 0.38%, to 7,718.41, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 77.07 points, or 0.29%, to 26,506.99.

All three major US benchmarks ended lower ahead of the three-day holiday weekend. On a weekly basis, however, the indexes were broadly unchanged.

The latest jobs data has therefore become an important variable for global equity markets as investors reassess the likely direction of US monetary policy.

US Treasury Yields Remain Elevated

Bond-market movements will also remain on investors' radar. The yield on the benchmark 10-year US Treasury was trading close to levels not seen since late 2023, reflecting continued attention on inflation, government borrowing and the Federal Reserve's next policy decision.

Higher US bond yields can affect global capital flows because they influence the relative attractiveness of dollar-denominated assets. Emerging markets such as India can consequently experience changes in foreign investment flows when US yields rise sharply.

Asian Currencies Mostly Strengthen

Most Asian currencies gained against the US dollar in early trading. The South Korean won led the regional gains, followed by the Indonesian rupiah, Japanese yen, Taiwan dollar and Chinese renminbi.

The Thai baht also advanced, while the Philippine peso, Malaysian ringgit and Singapore dollar recorded modest declines.

Currency movements remain important for Indian investors because fluctuations in the dollar can affect foreign portfolio flows, import costs and the rupee.

Crude Oil Moves Higher

Oil prices extended their gains as renewed attacks involving the US and Iran raised concerns about potential disruption to energy supplies from the Middle East.

The Strait of Hormuz remains particularly important to global energy markets because disruptions in the region can quickly affect crude prices and inflation expectations.

For India, a major oil importer, a prolonged rise in crude prices could increase pressure on the trade balance and fuel-related costs. Consequently, energy prices are likely to remain one of the key external factors for Indian equities.

Gold Under Pressure

Gold prices remained lower after stronger US payroll data and heightened geopolitical tensions altered expectations surrounding US interest rates.

The precious metal has benefited from safe-haven demand during periods of uncertainty, but higher interest-rate expectations can create pressure because gold does not provide an interest income.

Investors will therefore continue to watch the interaction between geopolitical risks, US monetary policy and Treasury yields.

Domestic Institutional Buying Provides Support

Domestic institutional investors continued to provide an important source of support for Indian equities.

DIIs bought shares worth ₹8,930 crore on September 4, extending their buying streak to the 19th consecutive session. In contrast, foreign institutional investors remained sellers for the second consecutive session, offloading equities worth ₹3,111 crore.

The divergence between domestic and foreign flows remains an important feature of the current market environment. Strong DII participation could help cushion declines if overseas investors continue to reduce exposure, although sustained FII selling could still weigh on benchmark indices.

What Investors Should Watch

The opening direction of GIFT Nifty, crude oil prices, US bond yields, currency movements and foreign fund flows are likely to remain key indicators for Monday's session. Global developments around US-Iran tensions could also influence risk appetite throughout the day.

With domestic benchmarks recovering only modestly after a difficult week, investors may prefer to track these external signals closely before taking directional positions. The combination of elevated oil prices, changing US rate expectations and divergent institutional flows suggests that volatility could remain a feature of the market in the near term.
