Stock Market Outlook: 10 Key Factors Investors Will Watch on Monday
Indian stock markets are heading into Monday’s session with investors balancing domestic buying interest against a mixed global backdrop. The benchmark indices managed to finish higher on Friday, but much of the day’s advance faded toward the close, highlighting the cautious mood among traders.
The Sensex gained 363 points to settle at 76,515, while the Nifty 50 added more than 24 points and closed at 23,897.70. The broader market delivered a mixed performance, with the Nifty Midcap 100 ending lower while the Nifty Smallcap 100 finished in positive territory.
As trading resumes, several domestic and international developments could influence market direction.
1. US Federal Reserve expectations
The outlook for US interest rates remains one of the biggest global triggers for equities. Friday’s stronger-than-expected US employment figures changed expectations surrounding the Federal Reserve’s policy path.
The US economy added 162,000 jobs in August, significantly above the consensus estimate of 56,000. The unemployment rate remained at 4.1%.
The stronger labour-market reading increased expectations that the Federal Reserve could consider raising rates this month. Any further shift in expectations could influence global bond yields, currencies and emerging-market equities, including Indian stocks.
2. US inflation data
Investors will also closely track upcoming US inflation figures. The next US Consumer Price Index report is expected to provide important clues about whether inflationary pressure is easing sufficiently for the Federal Reserve to adopt a less aggressive stance.
A moderation in core inflation could reinforce expectations of a pause in rate increases and potentially reduce volatility in bond yields. Conversely, a stronger inflation reading could revive concerns about tighter monetary policy.
3. Wall Street performance
US equities ended lower on Friday following the stronger jobs report. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.51%, while the S&P 500 fell 0.38% and the Nasdaq slipped 0.29%.
The three major US indices were broadly flat over the week. Their performance could influence sentiment in Asian markets when Indian trading begins.
Corporate developments also weighed on Wall Street. Lululemon dropped sharply after reducing its full-year forecasts, while Adobe declined following the announcement of a new chief executive.
4. European market signals
European equities ended marginally higher on Friday, but the region’s STOXX 600 recorded a weekly decline of around 0.8%.
Markets there remained sensitive to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, higher crude prices, inflation concerns and expectations that central banks could keep monetary conditions restrictive for longer.
These global concerns remain relevant for Indian investors because movements in crude oil, inflation and overseas interest rates can affect domestic market sentiment.
5. Middle East tensions and crude oil
Geopolitical developments remain another important risk factor. Continuing tensions in the Middle East have contributed to concerns about energy prices and inflation.
Higher crude prices can create additional pressure for oil-importing economies such as India. Investors will therefore watch oil-price movements closely, particularly because a sustained increase in energy costs can influence corporate margins, inflation expectations and the broader economic outlook.
6. Nifty technical levels
From a technical perspective, the Nifty remains in a relatively narrow trading range.
Analysts cited in the report observed that the index was trading below its hourly 50-period exponential moving average. The 24,000–24,200 region is therefore being viewed as an important resistance zone.
On the downside, 23,830 and 23,700 have emerged as key levels to watch. A sustained move above resistance could improve sentiment, while a break below support could increase selling pressure.
7. Stock-specific activity
Friday’s trading session showed that investors continued to focus heavily on individual stocks rather than making broad-based bets across the market.
Swiggy, IFCI, BSE, Reliance Industries, Tejas Networks, New India Assurance and Polycab India were among the stocks recording high turnover on the NSE.
Such activity indicates that stock-specific developments could remain an important source of volatility during Monday’s session.
8. Stocks attracting buying interest
Several companies witnessed notable buying interest on Friday. These included New India Assurance, Tejas Networks, Wockhardt, Affle (India), Pine Labs, Supreme Petro and IGL.
Some of these counters also featured among stocks reaching their 52-week highs, indicating strong momentum in selected parts of the market.
9. Stocks facing selling pressure
The market was not uniformly positive. Selling pressure was visible in counters including KEI Industries, R R Kabel, Polycab India, Finolex Cables, Havells India, Poly Medicure and Ramkrishna Forgings.
Investors may continue to monitor these stocks for signs of whether Friday’s weakness develops into a broader trend or remains limited to individual counters.
10. Broader market participation
Market breadth remained relatively favourable. Of the 3,648 stocks traded on the NSE on Friday, 2,017 advanced, while 1,519 declined and 112 remained unchanged.
The breadth suggests that participation extended beyond the headline indices, even as benchmark gains remained modest.
What could shape Monday’s session?
The coming session is likely to be driven by a combination of global interest-rate expectations, US inflation signals, geopolitical developments and domestic stock-specific activity. While strong earnings, economic resilience and domestic demand continue to support investor confidence, elevated valuations in some pockets and external risks could keep traders cautious.
For the Nifty, the immediate focus is likely to remain on whether the index can regain the 24,000–24,200 region or instead move toward the 23,830 and 23,700 support zones. With global markets reacting to changing expectations around US monetary policy, Monday’s trading could remain sensitive to overseas cues as well as individual corporate developments.
Investors will therefore enter the new week watching both the broader macroeconomic picture and the increasingly important stock-specific signals emerging across Indian equities.
