Sree Vishnu Says ‘Comrade Kalyan’ Does Not Hurt Naxal Sensibilities

Telugu actor Sree Vishnu is preparing for the release of his upcoming film ‘Comrade Kalyan’, a period entertainer that combines comedy, romance and a Naxalism-related backdrop. Directed by debutant Janakiram Marella and presented by writer Kona Venkat, the film has already attracted attention with its recently released teaser.

Set in the early 1990s in a village near the Andhra Pradesh–Odisha border, the film follows Sree Vishnu as Kalyan, a theatre owner whose life takes an unexpected turn. Although the story eventually brings him closer to a Naxal group, the makers appear to have approached the subject through an entertainment-driven narrative rather than presenting it as a conventional political drama.

The Naxal backdrop naturally makes the project different from the light-hearted entertainers for which Sree Vishnu is known. However, the actor has indicated that the film has been made with considerable care and does not intend to offend the sentiments associated with the subject.

The teaser itself suggests that the filmmakers have deliberately balanced the serious setting with humour. Rather than making the entire story heavy or intense, the narrative appears to move between comedy, romance, emotion and moments connected to the revolutionary backdrop.

Sree Vishnu plays a character who initially appears to lead a relatively simple life as a theatre owner. His admiration for revolutionary filmmaker R. Narayanamurthy is also incorporated into the characterisation. As the story progresses, circumstances push Kalyan towards a completely different path.

The actor has described the film as a fun-filled experience for audiences, while the title carries a positive meaning. During the teaser launch, he explained that “Comrade” refers to a friend and that Kalyan represents someone who wishes well for others.

A different take on a serious backdrop

Films dealing with Naxalism often focus on violence, ideology and political conflict. ‘Comrade Kalyan’, however, appears to be taking another route.

The teaser introduces a village environment on the Andhra Pradesh–Odisha border and establishes the presence of Naxal groups. At the same time, Sree Vishnu's comic timing remains central to the presentation. His character's journey from an ordinary theatre owner to someone associated with the revolutionary movement forms one of the film's key points of curiosity.

One of the major questions surrounding the story is what exactly drives Kalyan towards Naxalism. The teaser intentionally leaves that transformation partly unexplained, giving audiences a reason to wait for the full film.

The makers have also brought several experienced performers into the cast. Mahima Nambiar plays the female lead, while Radhikaa Sarathkumar, Shine Tom Chacko, Upendra Limaye, Satya and Sudharshan are part of the ensemble. Their presence is expected to strengthen both the dramatic and comic portions of the film.

Strong support from the film industry

The teaser launch event also saw several prominent names from the Telugu film industry attending and speaking about the project.

Veteran filmmaker and actor R. Narayanamurthy, whose work has frequently dealt with social and revolutionary themes, was among the notable guests. He praised Sree Vishnu for supporting new directors and spoke about the importance of allowing filmmakers the freedom to express their ideas.

Other filmmakers, including Vijayendra Prasad, Bobby, Shiva Nirvana and Nandini Reddy, also expressed their support for the project and its team during the event. Their presence added further attention to the film ahead of its theatrical release.

For director Janakiram Marella, ‘Comrade Kalyan’ marks his debut as a filmmaker. He has received strong backing from Sree Vishnu and Kona Venkat, making the project an important beginning to his directorial career.

Big expectations for ‘Comrade Kalyan’

Kona Venkat is presenting the film, which is produced by Venkata Krishna Karnati and Seeta Karnati under the Skanda Vahana Motion Pictures LLP banner. The technical team includes cinematographer Sai Sriram, editor Chota K. Prasad and music composer Vijai Bulganin.

The teaser has positioned ‘Comrade Kalyan’ as an unusual combination of a period setting, romance, comedy and a revolutionary backdrop. Instead of revealing the complete story, it focuses on the personality of Kalyan and the unusual situations surrounding him.

The film is scheduled to reach theatres on October 9, 2026. With Sree Vishnu once again choosing a story that moves away from a conventional commercial formula, the film will be closely watched to see how successfully its humour and serious backdrop work together.
