Rashmika Mandanna Begins a New Chapter With M.S. Subbulakshmi Biopic

Rashmika Mandanna is taking on one of the most distinctive roles of her career as she steps into the world of legendary Carnatic vocalist M.S. Subbulakshmi.

The much-awaited biopic was officially launched in Chennai on September 16, coinciding with the 110th birth anniversary of M.S. Subbulakshmi. The first shot featuring Rashmika was given the ceremonial clap by veteran actor Kamal Haasan.

The film has been titled “M.S. – A Legacy On Screen” and is being directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri. Music composer Anirudh Ravichander is also part of the project, adding another major name from contemporary Indian cinema to the team.

Why This Is More Than a Traditional Biopic

M.S. Subbulakshmi's story is not simply about a successful singer.

She became one of India's most recognised classical musicians, earning the Bharat Ratna, while also taking Indian classical music to audiences beyond the country's traditional concert circuit. At the event, he recalled listening to her renditions of works such as Suprabhatam, Lalitha Sahasranamam and Rangapura Vihara. He also highlighted how her music crossed linguistic boundaries, reaching listeners through Sanskrit, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada.

Kamal also emphasised the responsibility involved in portraying someone as iconic as M.S. Subbulakshmi, while expressing confidence in Rashmika taking on the role.

Director Gowtam Tinnanuri is another important part of the project.

Rather than presenting M.S. Subbulakshmi only as a celebrated musician, the filmmaking team has indicated an interest in exploring the woman behind the public legend.

The makers have spoken about extensive research into her life, including her achievements, struggles, sacrifices and personal journey. Producer statements indicate that the project has involved several years of preparation and efforts to work with her family and sources connected to her life.

That approach could make the film different from a conventional celebrity biography.

Anirudh Ravichander's Role

The involvement of Anirudh Ravichander is another talking point.

M.S. Subbulakshmi's music occupies a very different space from the contemporary soundscape associated with Anirudh. The project therefore presents an interesting musical challenge: connecting a legendary classical legacy with today's movie audience.
