Naidu’s Narasapuram Remarks Trigger Political Pushback from Former Jana Sena Leader

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s public assessment of Narasapuram MLA Bommidi Nayakar’s constituency performance has sparked a political debate within the ruling alliance, with former Jana Sena leader and environmentalist Bolisetti Satyanarayana questioning whether the same yardstick is being applied to all legislators.

The controversy followed Naidu’s visit to Mogaltur in the Narasapuram Assembly constituency on September 1, where he took part in the Pedala Sevalo programme. During his interaction with officials and the public, the Chief Minister reviewed the performance of the constituency and expressed dissatisfaction with the progress recorded across several development indicators.

According to the assessment presented during the visit, the district as a whole was performing reasonably well, but Narasapuram was reportedly falling behind in a number of areas. Naidu pointed out that 23 of the 25 indicators used to assess the constituency were in negative territory.

The Chief Minister described the situation as unacceptable and sought immediate corrective measures. He also instructed officials to replace the existing nodal officer with someone more active, signalling that the administration would be expected to respond more effectively to the shortcomings identified during the review.

Naidu Puts Responsibility on MLA

Naidu also made it clear that elected representatives could not limit their role to bringing problems to the Chief Minister’s attention. In his view, the MLA should take responsibility for ensuring that issues within the constituency are addressed and that development indicators improve.

The public nature of the remarks has now become the focus of a political exchange.

Bolisetti Satyanarayana responded to Naidu’s comments through a social media post. Rather than objecting to the idea of publicly evaluating an MLA, Bolisetti said that such scrutiny could actually strengthen democratic accountability.

His criticism was directed instead at what he described as the need for consistency in applying the practice.

Bolisetti questioned whether other MLAs belonging to the ruling alliance would be subjected to the same kind of public evaluation. He argued that holding elected representatives accountable before the people could be a positive practice, provided it was not selectively applied.

Question Over Uniform Standards

In his remarks, Bolisetti referred specifically to the constituencies represented by Hindupur MLA and actor-politician Nandamuri Balakrishna and Denduluru MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar.

He suggested that a similar public review could have been conducted in those constituencies as well. By raising these examples, Bolisetti sought to shift the discussion from the performance of a single MLA to the broader question of how the government measures the work of legislators across the alliance.

The former Jana Sena leader's argument is essentially that accountability becomes more meaningful when it is applied consistently. If one MLA is publicly questioned over constituency-level indicators, he believes that other legislators should also face comparable scrutiny based on the same standards.

Wider Significance for the Ruling Alliance

The episode comes at a time when coordination and performance within the Andhra Pradesh ruling alliance remain politically significant. Jana Sena and Telugu Desam Party leaders are part of the governing arrangement, making public criticism involving a Jana Sena MLA particularly noteworthy.

Naidu’s remarks were focused on development performance and administrative functioning rather than merely political differences. His emphasis on measurable indicators suggests an approach in which constituency-level progress is expected to be assessed through specific parameters.

Bolisetti, meanwhile, has not rejected that principle. His response indicates that he sees value in using such indicators to evaluate elected representatives, but wants the process to be applied across the board.

For the ruling alliance, a systematic performance review of all MLAs could potentially provide a clearer picture of where administrative improvements are needed. It could also give elected representatives measurable targets instead of relying solely on political assessments.

At the same time, publicly highlighting shortcomings can create political sensitivities, particularly when the legislator belongs to an allied party.

The Narasapuram episode therefore goes beyond a disagreement over one constituency’s performance. It has opened a larger discussion about accountability, measurable development indicators and whether elected representatives across the ruling alliance should be judged according to a common standard.

Bolisetti’s central contention is that if public questioning of MLAs becomes an established practice, its credibility will depend on equal application. In his view, a transparent and uniform assessment mechanism could ultimately strengthen the functioning of the entire ruling alliance rather than target individual legislators.
