Konda Surekha Takes Aim at CM Revanth Reddy, Demands Action Before Any Move Against Her
Telangana politics witnessed another sharp turn on Wednesday as Minister Konda Surekha openly questioned the leadership of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy amid an escalating dispute within the state Congress unit. Her remarks, made during her visit to New Delhi, have added fresh intensity to an issue that has already drawn the attention of the party’s central leadership.
Surekha reportedly argued that any disciplinary action against her should not be considered in isolation and insisted that the same standards must be applied to senior leaders, including the Chief Minister. Her comments come at a time when differences within the Telangana Congress have become increasingly visible.
Surekha Questions Proposed Action Against Her
The immediate controversy revolves around statements made by Surekha’s daughter, Konda Sushmita. The minister questioned why she should face disciplinary consequences for remarks made independently by a family member.
Surekha maintained that she should not automatically be held responsible for the political opinions expressed by her daughter. She also referred to the Congress leadership’s emphasis on women being able to express their views independently.
The minister’s position is significant because the controversy has reportedly reached the party’s national leadership. Recent developments in Delhi have included meetings involving senior Congress leaders, with the question of possible disciplinary action against Surekha becoming an important subject of discussion.
‘Action Should Begin With the Chief Minister’
In one of the strongest aspects of her latest comments, Surekha turned the disciplinary question toward Revanth Reddy himself.
She questioned whether the Chief Minister should also face action if the party is examining alleged violations of discipline. According to reports, she argued that action should not selectively target one leader while ignoring allegations or complaints involving others in the government and party organisation.
Her comments have therefore transformed what initially appeared to be an internal disciplinary dispute into a broader debate over accountability and equality within the Telangana Congress.
Surekha also questioned the Chief Minister’s authority to announce election tickets at public meetings without, in her view, adequately consulting other senior leaders. The remarks indicate the depth of disagreement between the minister and the state party leadership.
BC Representation Becomes Part of the Dispute
Another important element of Surekha’s statement was her reference to representation of Backward Classes within the Congress.
The senior leader alleged that she was being singled out because she is a senior woman leader from the BC community. She questioned whether different standards were being applied to leaders from different social backgrounds.
Her comments have added a social and political dimension to the ongoing disagreement. Rather than presenting the issue simply as a personal dispute, Surekha has framed it as a question of fairness in the treatment of leaders within the ruling party.
Allegations Against Other Leaders Raised
Surekha also questioned why action was allegedly being contemplated against her when accusations of irregularities and corruption have surfaced against other leaders and ministers.
She demanded to know who would be held accountable for such allegations and when action would be taken in those cases. She further claimed that dissatisfaction exists among several ministers and elected representatives within the government.
These are political allegations made by Surekha and do not, by themselves, establish wrongdoing by the individuals she referred to. No independent finding confirming those allegations was indicated in the reports reviewed.
Congress Leadership Faces a Difficult Balancing Act
The controversy places the Telangana Congress leadership in a delicate position. Revanth Reddy has sought the party high command’s attention on the issue, while Surekha has taken her case directly to senior leaders in Delhi.
The dispute is particularly notable because Surekha remains a senior Congress politician and a member of the Telangana cabinet. Any disciplinary decision could therefore have implications beyond an individual disagreement and potentially affect the broader political balance within the state unit.
The developments also follow an earlier public attempt at easing tensions. During Raksha Bandhan, Surekha visited Revanth Reddy’s residence and tied a rakhi to him, an interaction that generated considerable political discussion at the time.
That episode had raised expectations that tensions might be cooling. Her latest comments, however, suggest that significant differences remain unresolved.
What Happens Next?
The immediate focus is now on the Congress high command and how it chooses to handle the dispute. With both sides putting forward sharply different positions, the leadership will have to weigh questions of party discipline, internal unity and the political consequences of any action.
For Surekha, the message from Delhi is clear: she does not appear willing to accept disciplinary proceedings against herself without challenging what she considers inconsistent treatment within the party.
For Revanth Reddy and the Telangana Congress leadership, the challenge will be to contain the disagreement without allowing it to develop into a wider factional conflict. The coming days could therefore prove important in determining whether the dispute is resolved internally or becomes a larger political issue for the ruling Congress government in Telangana.
