Telangana to Roll Out ATM-Style Smart Ration Cards for Beneficiaries

The Telangana government is preparing to introduce a new generation of smart ration cards, replacing the paper-based documents that have been used for years. Designed in the form of durable PVC cards similar in size to an ATM card, the initiative aims to modernize the Public Distribution System (PDS), improve convenience for beneficiaries, and reduce the scope for misuse.

According to officials, the newly printed cards have already been dispatched to civil supplies offices across the state's districts. Distribution is expected to begin once the government issues the final operational guidelines. Local authorities have reportedly completed the necessary preparations so that beneficiaries can receive the cards without delay.

The upgraded cards will feature the photograph of the family head, a unique ration card number, and a QR code that stores key beneficiary information. When scanned by authorized officials, the code will provide quick access to details such as registered family members, age information, and Aadhaar linkage, making the verification process faster and more secure.

Officials believe the move will address several problems associated with the older paper ration cards, which often became damaged due to regular handling, moisture, or wear and tear. Many beneficiaries previously had to obtain printed copies from online service centers after their original cards became unreadable. The durable PVC format is expected to offer a longer lifespan while reducing the inconvenience faced by cardholders.

The smart cards are also expected to strengthen transparency in the food distribution network. Beneficiaries will continue to access subsidized food grains under the One Nation, One Ration Card scheme, allowing eligible families to collect their rations from authorized fair price shops across the country. Authentication through biometric verification, including fingerprints or iris scans, will remain part of the distribution process to ensure benefits reach the intended recipients.

Authorities say the cards have been produced using updated beneficiary records along with data from recently submitted applications. Once the official rollout schedule is announced, district administrations and ration dealers will begin distributing the new cards to eligible households. The government expects the initiative to make the ration distribution system more efficient, secure, and user-friendly while helping curb fraudulent practices.
