Sensex Ends Higher After Volatile Session; Nifty Holds Above 24,600

Indian equity markets finished Wednesday on a positive note despite sharp swings during the final minutes of trading, as investors adjusted to the recently introduced Closing Auction Session (CAS). The benchmark indices recovered from late-session weakness, allowing the BSE Sensex to close with gains of around 150 points while the NSE Nifty ended the day above the 24,600 mark.

Trading remained highly volatile throughout the session. Investors closely watched the impact of the new closing mechanism, which has changed how official closing prices are determined for several stocks. The revised process contributed to significant movement near the market close, although buying interest helped benchmarks finish in positive territory.

The Sensex settled at 78,581.00, gaining 152.05 points, while the Nifty 50 added 9.75 points to close at 24,624.65. Market breadth remained encouraging, with advancing shares comfortably outnumbering declining ones, indicating that buying was spread across a wider section of the market rather than being limited to a handful of large-cap stocks.

Among sectoral performers, realty, automobile and metal stocks attracted investor interest and outperformed the broader market for most of the trading session. These gains helped offset weakness in a few heavyweight stocks, allowing the headline indices to remain in positive territory despite late selling pressure.

The introduction of the Closing Auction Session continues to be one of the biggest talking points in the market. Under the new framework, eligible stocks determine their closing prices through a dedicated auction window instead of relying on the earlier volume-weighted average method. While the transition has resulted in unusual price movements and temporary differences between the Sensex and Nifty, market participants expect trading patterns to stabilize as investors and institutions become more familiar with the process.

Apart from domestic market mechanics, investors also remained focused on broader economic developments, including interest rate expectations, corporate earnings and global market cues. Analysts believe these factors will continue to influence trading sentiment in the coming sessions alongside the market's adaptation to the new closing system.

Although the day's gains were modest, the ability of the indices to recover from intraday volatility suggested that investors remain willing to buy on declines. However, traders are expected to stay cautious until the impact of the Closing Auction Session becomes more predictable and volatility near the close begins to ease.

Looking ahead, market participants will monitor corporate earnings, global economic developments, foreign investment flows and policy-related announcements for fresh direction. With the new auction mechanism still in its early days, analysts expect short-term fluctuations to persist, even as the broader market gradually adjusts to the revised trading framework.
