Nepal Flash Floods Kill Eight Near Tibet Border as Rescue Operations Intensify

At least eight people have died after a sudden and powerful flash flood swept through parts of Nepal’s mountainous Rasuwa district on Wednesday, August 26, causing widespread destruction near the country’s border with Tibet. The disaster damaged roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure, while authorities warned that the number of casualties could rise as rescue teams reach areas cut off by floodwaters.

The worst-affected locations include Syapru Besi and Timure, settlements in Rasuwa district situated along the Bhote Koshi River. The river rose rapidly, sending large volumes of water and debris through nearby communities and infrastructure sites. Residents living close to the river were advised to move towards safer, higher ground as officials assessed the extent of the damage.

Rescue Efforts Face Major Challenges

Nepal has mobilised helicopters as part of its emergency response, with police, the military and other rescue personnel involved in relief operations. However, the unusually high water levels have made it impossible for helicopters to land in some of the most severely affected areas.

Officials said rescue teams may have to wait for floodwaters to recede before aircraft can safely reach certain locations. The mountainous terrain and damaged transport links are adding to the difficulties faced by emergency workers.

Authorities have also warned communities downstream to remain alert. Because the Bhote Koshi eventually joins the Trishuli River, the effects of the sudden surge have extended beyond Rasuwa into other areas.

Villages and Infrastructure Swept Away

The force of the flood caused serious damage to homes and infrastructure. Roads and bridges were affected, while sites connected to Nepal’s hydropower sector also suffered damage.

Nepal’s Energy Ministry estimated that around 430 MW of electricity capacity had been affected, with most of the impact involving hydropower facilities. That represents more than 12% of the country’s total installed hydropower capacity of about 3.2 GW.

The destruction has therefore created concerns not only for residents but also for transportation, electricity generation and economic activity in the region.

The sudden nature of the event has made the situation particularly dangerous. Officials said people living along the river should remain cautious because additional flooding or related hazards could develop.

Damage Reported Across the Border in Tibet

The disaster has also affected areas on the Chinese side of the border. A mudslide reached the Gyirong area in Tibet, with Chinese state media reporting major casualties and missing people.

The incident affected the Gyirong Port area and disrupted roads, communications and electricity infrastructure in parts of the Shigatse region. Chinese authorities have begun emergency response measures while search teams work to locate people who may have been caught in the disaster.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for extensive search-and-rescue efforts and urged authorities to give priority to finding missing people and helping those affected. He also called for stronger monitoring and early-warning measures to reduce the risk of further disasters.

Cause of Flood Still Being Assessed

The immediate cause of Wednesday’s sudden inundation has not been conclusively established. The Bhote Koshi originates in Tibet before flowing through Nepal and eventually joining the river system that enters India.

The region has previously experienced destructive flooding. A major flash flood affecting the same river in 2025 was later linked to the drainage of a glacial lake, highlighting the vulnerability of Himalayan communities to sudden high-altitude water events. However, authorities have not yet confirmed that the same mechanism was responsible for the latest disaster.

Authorities Urge Residents to Stay Alert

Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah said security forces were participating in rescue and relief operations and instructed authorities to move people from vulnerable low-lying areas to safer locations.

With roads and other infrastructure damaged, officials are continuing to assess affected communities and determine the scale of the destruction. The immediate focus remains on rescuing people trapped by floodwaters, locating those reported missing and preventing additional casualties.

As emergency teams continue their work, authorities in both Nepal and Tibet are keeping a close watch on river levels and the possibility of further landslides or flooding. The disaster has once again highlighted the risks faced by communities and critical infrastructure in the Himalayan border region, where sudden changes in water levels can rapidly turn into life-threatening emergencies.
