Nagarjuna Reveals Family Faced Digital Arrest in Cybercrime Scam

Hyderabad: Telugu cinema star Akkineni Nagarjuna has spoken publicly about a disturbing cybercrime experience involving his family, saying the incident showed him how easily fraudsters can use fear and deception to manipulate even well-known and financially secure people.

Nagarjuna shared the experience while attending the ‘Suraksha Ka Tiranga’ cyber awareness programme held in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad. The event was organised as part of efforts to create greater awareness about online fraud and cybercrime. Telangana DGP C.V. Anand was also associated with the programme.

During his interaction at the event, Nagarjuna said he too had encountered cyber fraud attempts. Recalling one incident from several years ago, the actor said a person allegedly approached him while pretending to be a bank official. The caller attempted to gain his confidence by discussing investment opportunities and suggesting that Nagarjuna could earn substantial returns through particular stock investments.

The actor's account highlighted a common tactic used in online scams: fraudsters often establish credibility by presenting themselves as representatives of banks, government agencies or other trusted institutions before trying to persuade their targets to take a particular action.

Family Targeted Through a Digital Arrest Scam

Nagarjuna also revealed that his family experienced a far more serious situation involving what is commonly described as a digital arrest scam.

According to the actor, members of his family were threatened using claims connected to a drugs-related parcel. The fraudsters allegedly created an atmosphere of fear and kept the family members under their control for approximately six to seven hours.

The incident demonstrated how cybercriminals can exploit allegations involving serious offences to frighten victims into following instructions. Rather than relying only on financial promises, such scams can use intimidation, false authority and psychological pressure.

Nagarjuna's disclosure is significant because it reinforces the fact that cybercrime can affect people across different sections of society. The actor noted that having social status, professional success or access to resources does not automatically protect someone from sophisticated digital fraud.

Actor Shares His Own Security Habits

Nagarjuna also spoke about the importance of taking basic cybersecurity precautions in everyday life. He recalled that his awareness of computer-related threats goes back to his engineering-student days, when he was introduced to computers and heard warnings about issues such as malware and hacking.

The actor said he follows certain security practices personally. He stated that he changes his mobile password every week and updates his Wi-Fi password once a month. He also said that he avoids keeping personal photographs stored on his mobile phone.

His comments were aimed at encouraging people to treat digital security as an ongoing responsibility rather than something that needs attention only after a cyberattack.

Praise for Telangana Cyber Police

Nagarjuna also praised Telangana's cybercrime and cybersecurity teams for their work against online criminals. He said the state's cyber police have built a strong reputation in tackling cyber offences and pursuing criminals, including cases that require investigations beyond the country's borders.

He further appreciated the efforts of senior police officials in combating piracy, an issue that has long affected the film industry. According to Nagarjuna, action taken against piracy networks has benefited not only Tollywood but the wider Indian entertainment industry.

The actor's remarks came at a time when cyber fraud has become an increasingly visible public concern, with criminals using phone calls, messaging platforms, impersonation and other digital methods to target victims.

A Warning for the Digital Age

The larger message from Nagarjuna's experience was one of caution. Cybercriminals do not necessarily depend on complicated technology in every case; instead, many scams succeed because victims are placed under intense emotional pressure and are made to believe that they are dealing with an official authority.

A fake bank representative, an invented criminal investigation or a threatening claim about an illegal parcel can all be used as tools to create panic. Once a victim becomes frightened, scammers may attempt to prevent them from seeking advice from family members, friends or genuine authorities.

By sharing his family's experience, Nagarjuna urged people to remain alert while using digital services. His comments also underline the importance of verifying unexpected calls and claims before providing personal information, transferring money or following instructions from unknown individuals.

For the actor, the experience served as a reminder that cybersecurity is not limited to protecting devices or passwords. It also involves recognising manipulation, questioning suspicious claims and seeking help when something appears wrong.

The message from the awareness programme was therefore straightforward: digital convenience must be accompanied by digital caution. Nagarjuna's personal experience has added a high-profile voice to that warning, showing that cybercriminals can attempt to exploit anyone if the right opportunity arises.
