Hyderabad Plans New Skywalks to Improve Pedestrian Safety at Major Junctions

Hyderabad is preparing to strengthen pedestrian infrastructure with plans to build new skywalks at some of the city's busiest traffic corridors. The proposed projects are aimed at making road crossings safer while improving access to public transport and reducing congestion in high-footfall areas.

According to discussions held by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), new pedestrian skywalks have been proposed at LB Nagar, Dilsukhnagar, Hitec City, and the IKEA junction. These locations experience heavy movement of commuters every day, making safe pedestrian connectivity an important priority.

The proposed skywalks are expected to provide dedicated elevated pathways, allowing people to cross busy roads without interacting with fast-moving traffic. Authorities believe this will help lower the risk of accidents while encouraging more people to walk between metro stations, bus stops, commercial centers, and nearby residential areas.

The skywalk initiative is part of a wider urban mobility strategy being developed by HMDA. Along with pedestrian improvements, officials are exploring several measures to create a more efficient transportation network across Hyderabad. These include enhancing first- and last-mile connectivity to public transport, improving facilities around MMTS and Metro stations, and promoting non-motorized transport options such as walking and cycling.

Urban planners also reviewed proposals to revamp spaces beneath flyovers for public use and introduce organized street vending zones at selected locations before expanding the concept to other parts of the city. Traffic management initiatives, including the use of intelligent traffic systems and simulation studies at key congestion points, are also under consideration to improve traffic flow across Hyderabad.

Officials say these combined efforts are intended to create a safer, more pedestrian-friendly urban environment while supporting Hyderabad's rapidly growing population and transportation needs. As the city continues to expand, projects that prioritize safe walking infrastructure are expected to play an increasingly important role in reducing traffic conflicts and encouraging greater use of public transit.

Once detailed planning and approvals are completed, the proposed skywalks could become a significant addition to Hyderabad's transport infrastructure, offering residents and visitors safer, faster, and more convenient movement through some of the city's busiest commercial and transit hubs.
