Andhra Pradesh to Roll Out Sanjeevani Healthcare Project Across State from January 1
Andhra Pradesh is preparing for a major expansion of its digital healthcare system, with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directing officials to implement the Sanjeevani Project across the state from January 1. The initiative is designed to make healthcare more accessible, technology-driven and focused not only on treatment but also on early detection and prevention.
The decision was taken during a high-level review meeting on the Sanjeevani programme at the Chief Minister’s camp office on August 26. Naidu said the experience gained from the programme’s implementation in Kuppam and parts of Chittoor should now be used to develop a comprehensive statewide model.
Digital health records at the centre of the programme
One of the major components of Sanjeevani will be the use of digital health records. The government believes that maintaining accessible and organised health information can help medical professionals make faster and better-informed decisions.
Naidu said the project should bring a significant change to the way healthcare is delivered in Andhra Pradesh. He also expressed the ambition of making the state a model that other states could study and adopt for technology-based healthcare delivery.
The broader objective is to reduce the financial burden healthcare places on families. According to the Chief Minister, households frequently have to spend substantial amounts on education and medical treatment, making affordable and preventive healthcare an important policy priority.
Pilot programme shows encouraging results
The government has already tested Sanjeevani in Kuppam and Chittoor. Officials presented the results of the pilot implementation during the review meeting.
In Chittoor, the programme was associated with improved control of hypertension, with officials reporting that 56% of identified hypertension cases came under control. They also reported a 16% reduction in the severity of diabetes cases.
The use of primary healthcare services also increased in the areas covered by the programme. A survey conducted among residents reportedly found that 91% of respondents felt their awareness about their health had improved after the programme was introduced.
These results are now being considered as the foundation for expanding Sanjeevani to the rest of Andhra Pradesh.
90-day preparation plan
Officials have prepared a 90-day action plan to support the statewide rollout. The preparation will include baseline studies, development of digital infrastructure, staff training and certification.
The programme is expected to involve healthcare personnel across all 28 districts. Training will be provided to help medical staff work with the new digital systems and integrate healthcare information with state and national health platforms.
The government is also working with Tata MD, which is associated with the project, to explore technology and innovation that can strengthen the healthcare system.
Greater focus on prevention and AI
The Chief Minister has asked officials to ensure that Sanjeevani goes beyond conventional treatment. The healthcare model is expected to emphasise predictive and preventive care, early identification of health risks and cost-effective treatment.
Artificial intelligence is also expected to play a larger role. The government wants AI-based medical assistance to be incorporated into the system, alongside modern healthcare technologies.
Naidu has also called for a broader approach to wellness by encouraging healthier food habits and lifestyle changes. The programme is expected to explore the use of practices such as yoga and pranayama along with modern medicine, Ayurveda and homeopathy.
Another proposed feature is a system through which patients can receive health-related updates directly on their mobile phones. This could help people keep track of their medical information and follow-up requirements more easily.
Data privacy and hospital services
As digital health information expands, the government has stressed the need to protect patient data. Naidu instructed officials to ensure that personal medical information remains secure and confidential.
The Chief Minister also directed authorities to pay closer attention to sanitation and outsourced services in hospitals. A mechanism is expected to be developed to take action against service providers who fail to maintain required standards.
The government believes that better service quality, reliable digital records and regular communication with patients can help improve public confidence in healthcare institutions.
January 1 statewide rollout
The Sanjeevani Project is therefore moving from a limited implementation phase toward a statewide healthcare initiative. The coming 90 days will be crucial for completing infrastructure, training personnel and connecting the necessary digital systems before the planned January 1 launch.
If the pilot results can be replicated across the state, the programme could become an important part of Andhra Pradesh’s strategy to shift healthcare from a largely treatment-focused approach toward one centred on prevention, early intervention, digital records and technology-assisted care.
