₹1 Lakh to ₹44 Lakh in Just 5 Minutes? Viral Sensex Trade Claim Explained
A striking claim about the stock market has gone viral after a trader suggested that a hypothetical investment of ₹1 lakh in a Sensex put option could have grown to around ₹44 lakh within just five minutes.
The extraordinary figure emerged after the benchmark Sensex experienced an unusually sharp movement during the final minutes of trading on Thursday, August 27. The sudden volatility, seen around the market's closing period, triggered considerable discussion among traders and investors on social media.
However, there is an important catch: the ₹1 lakh-to-₹44 lakh calculation does not represent a confirmed transaction in which someone actually made that amount of money. It was a hypothetical example based on the movement of the relevant option during the market's dramatic swings.
What Was the Viral Claim?
The discussion began with a post on social media suggesting that a trader who had bought a Sensex 76,500 put option with ₹1 lakh around 3:15 pm and exited approximately five minutes later could theoretically have generated a return of nearly ₹44 lakh.
The post described the hypothetical outcome as roughly a 44-times return over five minutes. The original social-media message also contained an apparent timing error, referring to 3:15 am instead of 3:15 pm.
The claim quickly attracted attention because such a return would be extraordinary even by the standards of derivatives trading.
Why Did the Sensex Move So Sharply?
The backdrop was an exceptional bout of volatility near the end of Thursday's trading session.
The Sensex, which was trading around the 77,200 level during the late afternoon, suddenly plunged by more than 2,000 points within minutes. It subsequently recovered a substantial portion of that decline just as quickly.
By the end of the session, the index had settled at 76,934, down 539 points from the previous close.
Such an abrupt movement in the underlying index can have a much larger impact on derivatives, particularly put options. When traders anticipate or benefit from a sharp fall in the underlying index, the value of certain put options can rise dramatically over a very short period.
That is the basic market movement behind the viral calculation.
The Role of the 76,500 Put Option
A put option generally gains value when the underlying asset or index moves lower, although the actual price of an option depends on several factors, including the strike price, time remaining until expiry, volatility and market demand.
In the example circulating online, the focus was on the Sensex 76,500 put option.
The hypothetical calculation assumed that an investor entered the position at around 3:15 pm and exited at approximately 3:20 pm, capturing the extraordinary movement that occurred during that narrow window.
If the assumed entry and exit prices were available in sufficient quantity and the entire ₹1 lakh position could be executed at those prices, the theoretical return could have been extremely large.
But that is very different from saying an investor actually turned ₹1 lakh into ₹44 lakh.
Closing Auction Session Under Spotlight
The unusual market action has also brought renewed attention to the Closing Auction Session, or CAS.
The new closing mechanism was introduced with the objective of improving the process used to determine closing prices and reducing the possibility of price manipulation. The mechanism has nevertheless attracted scrutiny after unusual movements were observed toward the end of trading.
The sharp swings seen during Thursday's session have therefore prompted questions among traders about how the new closing process is functioning and whether additional safeguards or changes may be needed.
The Sensex was not the only market indicator affected. Several major stocks also experienced sudden price movements during the closing period. Reliance Industries, for example, moved sharply lower before recovering most of the decline. HDFC Bank, ITC and Bharti Airtel were among other major stocks that also witnessed significant fluctuations.
Why Investors Should Be Careful With the ₹44 Lakh Figure
The headline number may sound like an easy money-making opportunity, but options trading does not work that way.
A theoretical calculation based on historical price movements assumes that an investor could enter and exit at precisely the required prices. In actual markets, execution can be affected by liquidity, bid-ask spreads, order size, price changes and the speed at which the market moves.
A five-minute window containing an extreme price movement can therefore be very difficult to trade successfully.
There is another major risk: while the right option position can produce extraordinary gains during a sudden market fall, the opposite position can suffer equally dramatic losses.
A Viral Calculation, Not Guaranteed Profit
The biggest takeaway from the incident is that the ₹44 lakh figure should be viewed as a hypothetical illustration of how powerful derivatives can become during an extreme market movement.
It does not establish that someone actually invested ₹1 lakh and withdrew ₹44 lakh five minutes later.
The episode does, however, demonstrate how quickly options prices can react when a major stock-market index experiences an unexpected move.
For ordinary investors, the incident is also a reminder that derivatives can carry substantially greater risk than conventional long-term investing. A spectacular theoretical return can attract attention online, but replicating such an outcome in real-time trading requires accurate timing, sufficient liquidity and the ability to execute orders under extremely volatile conditions.
As the viral Sensex example shows, a five-minute market move can create eye-catching numbers—but those numbers should not automatically be interpreted as a simple or reliable investment opportunity.
